Epoxy Side Table
| April 2022 |

This is a 14" epoxy resin cedar side table wth curved oak legs. The table top was made using Smooth On clear epoxy resin that was dyed black using black Transtint dye. I flattened the cedar wood cookie using a CNC router and scrap blocks and screws to fixture it. However, due to mechanical issues with the CNC, I made a flattening jig to flatten the table using a plunge router after the epoxy fills I did to fill the voids.  I CNC'ed the circular table mold from 3/4" MDF that was then screwed and brad nailed together. I lined the mold with laser cut PETG and sealed the seams with cauk and packing tape.

Smooth On is an industrial epoxy that requires a pressure pot, vacuum chamber, and oven for 6 hours of post curing. I skipped the vacuum for my table because of size constraints which left countless voids that had to be filled. I used an expoxy fill for the larger voids and black CA glue with activator for the smaller voids.

The legs are made from 3 pieces of 2" x 3/4" red oak that are at an 83° angle. I made a custom clamping jig from MDF using a laser cut template to route the MDF layers to final shape after rough cutting. The legs were then routed to final shape using a laser cut jig and a trim router, and were mouted to the table top using threaded inserts and furniture bolts.

Everything was sanded to 320 or 400 grit and I used Rubiomonocoat Pure with no activator for the finish for the first time and it turned out great.
